Biography:
Alderman Robertson is a Rockford native and East High School graduate who received his Associates of Art Degree from Rock Valley College and his Bachelor of Science degree from Southern Illinois University. After serving in the United States Marine Corp, Robertson then joined the Rockford Fire Department in 1972. He served on the Rockford Fire Department for 36 years, 17 years as Chief, before retiring June 15, 2008.
Before becoming 14th Ward Alderman in May 2009, Former Fire Chief Robertson worked his way through the department, serving in all ranks and many positions including Inspector; Driver/Engineer; Lieutenant; Captain and District Chief. In February 1990, Robertson assumed command of the Training Academy.
Robertson served as District Chief until his promotion to Chief of the Fire Department August 6, 1991. Upon becoming Fire Chief, Robertson also became responsible for administration and management of the Winnebago County E-911 Center leading it through many changes engendered by Y2K, the advances of cell phone technology and changes in several state statutes governing Public Service Answering Points or PSAPs.
During his 17-year tenure as Chief of the department, he led the fire department through many advances that allowed the Rockford Fire Department to receive several awards of distinction, including retention of an Insurance Service Office (ISO)rating of 2 on a scale of 1 to 10 and re-introduced quints to the operations of the department. Other achievements as Chief of the department include:
¨ Accreditation process with the Center for Public Safety
¨ Assuming all emergency care Advanced Life Support (ALS) responsibilities in 1998-1999
¨ The building and management of two 911 Centers
¨ Strong labor/management relationships
¨ Strong management practices such as the Quarterly Captains meeting
¨ Management philosophy embracing Total Quality Management (TQM) and a Goal Setting program which began in 1992
¨ Preceptor program for paramedics
¨ Taking over the responsibilities for the airport fire station
¨ Strong relationship with members of City Council
While Chief, Robertson’s leadership style focused on identifying and developing individual strengths through participation and by building a strong teams, which brought with it a stronger command staff and a labor/management relationship that was positive and productive.
During his tenure as Chief, Alderman Robertson’s professional activities also included work with many community-focused organizations such as: membership in the Downtown Rotary Club; serving on the Swedish American Hospital Board; working with Youth Services Network and President of the Shelter Care Board to name a few.
